What is Washboard Express?

Washboard Express is a way for me to express my own opinions, to be a provocative gadfly, by writing a "letter a day" to the President. I may miss a day here and there, because sometimes my family with be my first priority, but my goal is to write a total of 365 letters, representing one full year. To say I have opinions about most things would be to understate the obvious. Those of you that know me, know this is true, those who don't know me, will learn that it's true. The Washboard is a reference to going back to basics and "keeping it clean," so if you would like me to post your comments or opinions on this blog, I only ask that you be respectful. So go ahead, express yourself, and I look forward to an exchange of ideas and opinions.

Day 38...Dear Mr. President... Our Allies need to pay their fair share.

Day 38

Dear Mr. President,

I'd like to know how the United States became the "Parent" for the whole world? I'd like to know why the U.S. needs to always be the first to march in to troubled areas around the world and the last to leave them. Why is it acceptable for our allies to "bail" when wars become unpopular with their people or too expensive for their country to afford? Why is the U.S. always left to shoulder the majority of the costs in lives and dollars?

Robert Gates warned our European allies that the American people are becoming increasingly unhappy with the disproportionate share the U.S. is expected to shoulder, and he is absolutely correct. In fact, Gates was being very diplomatic in his warning to NATO. The reality is, the American people are fed up with the amount of money and lives being "wasted" abroad.

The needs at home are growing at an alarming rate, and yet we continue to see our tax dollars squandered in wars that are un-winnable and unsustainable, in countries that don't need us there or want us there. So what the devil are we doing, do we even know why we're there anymore? And please don't say it's to fight terrorism over there so we don't have to fight it over here, because to quote Ross Perot, "That dog don't hunt no more".

Right now the U.S. picks up 75% of the tab for NATO... why is that? If we're going to be the 'parent' for NATO then we need to do a better job of parenting. As a parent you know that the more you and Mrs. Obama do for the girls, the less they do for themselves. Isn't that why you give them chores even though there is plenty of staff to do it for them? The same thing applies to our allies in NATO and the countries we are trying to help... the more we do for them, the more they expect, and the less they do for themselves. I'm no scholar of the Bible, but I believe there is a saying that goes something like this: Give a man a fish, he eats for a day... teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.

It's time to change our tactics abroad, it's time to take a different course, because what we are doing isn't working, and it's bankrupting our country and our people. This isn't rocket science, it's called common sense... wake up Mr. President before your children revolt... become the kind of a 'parent' for this country, that you are for your own children, the American people deserve no less.

Most Respectfully,

Your Gadfly Granny
